This is a very simple recipe of cooking potatoes in a thin gravy flavored with masalas, onion, tomato, ginger, green chilli and fresh coriander. Perhaps, that is the reason why it is called ‘Jhol’ which means Tari or Thin Gravy. You can make this curry in a pan, but that takes time. So better cook in a Pressure Cooker that makes things easier and less time consuming giving the best results.

Recipe Ingredients

  • 4 medium Potatoes 
  • 1 large Tomato
  • 1 Large Onion
  • -3-4 pods Garlic minced
  • 2 teaspoon Chopped Ginger
  • 1 teaspoon Chopped Green chilli
  • 1 teaspoon Turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon Red chilli powder
  • 1.5 teaspoon Garam masala
  • 1 teaspoon Coriander powder
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin seeds (Jeera)
  • A handful Freshly chopped coriander
  • Salt - To taste
  • 1 tablespoon Oil
  • 2-3 cups Water

How to make Aloo Tamatar Jhol

  • To make this Aloo Tamatar Jhol we need to wash and peel potatoes and cut them in cubes or lengthwise. Keep aside.
  • Also chop onion and blend tomato in mixer to make fresh tomato puree. Keep aside.
  • Now heat oil in a pressure cooker and add cumin seeds. When they begin to crackle add in minced garlic, chopped onion, ginger and green chilli.
  • Fry till onion becomes translucent and the raw smell of garlic goes.
  • Now add turmeric powder, tomato puree and saute on medium flame till it oozes oil.
  • Add in cut potatoes with 3 cups of water. Season with salt, garam masala, coriander powder and red chilli powder.
  • Give a nice stir and finally add in freshly chopped coriander. Put on the lid and pressure cook on high heat for a whistle.
  • After a whistle reduce flame to sim and cook for another 5 minutes. Switch off the flame and let the pressure release before opening the lid of pressure cooker.
