Akki roti is a speciality bread from Kannada or Karnataka cuisine and usually served with pickles in breakfast, but it also tastes great with curries and stir fried veggies in the main course meals. The recipe to make akki roti is very much similar to that of Maharashtrian thalipeeth, but unlike a thalipeeth that has a combination of assorted flours, akki roti is made with rice flour or chawal ka atta. The one made purely with the rice flour is called ‘Plain akki roti’, but for a little variation in taste chopped veggies are often added to the rice flour. Hence you can experiment with your favorite vegetables like greens, cabbage, carrot, onion and make akki roti to suit your taste. Here we share you the recipe of ‘Menthya Soppu Rotti’ which is basically akki roti made with fresh fenugreek or methi leaves. This is slight chewy in texture and tastes great with chutneys and pickles in breakfast along with a cup of tea.
Did you know, ‘Akki Roti’ has different cooking techniques too and based on these techniques the texture or softness of these akki rotis changes. Akki roti made on kadhai or wok is known as ‘Bandli Rotti’, whereas the one made on banana leaf and cooked on tawa or skillet is called ‘Tattida Rotti’ whereas ‘Balida roti’means akki roti made on skillet while smearing ghee or oil and ‘Ubbu Rotti’ is akki roti that has the softest texture and puffs up while cooking.
*Methi akki roti tastes wonderful in breakfast with peanut coriander chutney and homemade instant garlic pickle.
*For a healthy school or office lunch box, pack these flavorful methi akki rotis with khatte meethe aloo or achaari dum aloo along with mango pickle.
*In main course meals, methi akki rotis taste great with kadai egg curry or French beans and potato curry. Do not miss to team with khandeshi masala khichidi, onion green chilly n ginger raita and chickpea salad for a balanced meal.
Small accompaniments like raita, pickle, salads not only make your meals ravishing, but they also help you to take a balanced diet inclusive of fresh vegetables and dairy products. You must check our recipes for……
