Recipe Ingredients

  • Idlis – 4
  • Shredded coconut (Fresh) – 1/4 cup
  • Fresh coriander (Chopped) – A handful
  • Milk/buttermilk – 1/2 cup
  • Green chilly – 1 (Optional)
  • Ginger – 1/2 inch piece
  • Salt – To taste

For tempering –

  • Oil – 2 table spoon
  • Channa dal – 1 tea spoon
  • Urad dal – 1 tea spoon
  • Mustard seeds – 2 tea spoon
  • Curry leaves – 4-6
  • Dry red chilly – 1

To garnish –

  • Freshly chopped coriander
  • Coconut flakes

How to make Chutney Idli

  • For making chutney idli, we need to make the ‘Chutney’ first. For this grind all the ingredients listed under first category to a smooth paste.
  • Our chutney is now ready.
  • Check the salt & consistency. Remember, since we would be serving the idlis only with ‘Chutney’, hence the consistency should not be very thick. So, adjust the amount of milk/buttermilk accordingly.

For serving –

Place the idlis in a shallow serving bowl and pour over the chutney. Now, we need to do the tempering. For this, heat oil in a pan. Add all the ingredients listed under second category and sauté on low flame till the curry leaves n mustard seeds crackle and the lentils turn pink. Remove from heat and pour over this tempering over the chutney idlis.

A wonderful healthy bowl of ‘Chutney Idli’ is ready. Garnish with some freshly chopped coriander, coconut flakes and serve.

Tips –

  • If you don’t have freshly scrapped coconut, then use coconut powder instead.
  • To make it more rich, add some cashew nuts, pine nuts & raisins in the tempering.
  • You can pack this dish for lunch box too. ‘Mini idlis’ go best for this. If you do not have ‘Mini Idli Moulds’….then cut the regular idlis into quarters. But, do not forget to use ‘Spill proof lunch boxes’.
  • You can make idlis a night before or simply use ‘Leftover Idlis’. But, do not miss to store them in refrigerator.
  • Storing ‘Idlis’ in refrigerator makes them hard. A simple solution is to microwave them for 30 seconds and then serve. This makes idlis soft and fluffy.
