  • Green peas – 200 gms. or 1.5 cups approx.
  • Turmeric powder – 1 tea spoon
  • Red chilly powder – 1 tea spoon
  • Garam masala powder – 1.5 tea spoon
  • Coriander powder – 1 tea spoon
  • Salt – To taste
  • Water – 1.5 cups or as required for gravy
  • Oil – 2 table spoon

To grind –

  • Onion – 1 large
  • Tomato – 1 medium
  • Ginger – 1 inch piece
  • Garlic – 5-7 cloves

To garnish –

  • A handful of freshly chopped coriander
  • Ginger cut in juliennes

How to make Aloo Matar Curry

  • To begin with, first we need to peel the potatoes and cut in 1 inch or bite size cubes. Keep aside. If prefer, you can also cut in larger pieces or quarters, but this would need more cooking time.
  • Also grind all the ingredients together listed under second category. This is our basic masala for the gravy. Keep aside.
  • Now, heat oil in a pressure cooker and add cumin seeds. When they crackle add all the powdered spices and the grounded masala.
  • Saute on medium flame till the raw smell of spices goes and the masala releases oil. Keep on stirring occasionally to avoid burning.
  • To this add potatoes, peas and water. Season with salt and give a nice stir.
  • Close the lid and pressure cook for 2 whistles or till the veggies are cooked to perfection.
  • Remove from heat and let the pressure release on its own.

‘Aloo matar curry’ is now ready. Transfer to a serving bowl and garnish with some freshly chopped coriander and juliennes of ginger. Team up with piping hot phulkas/paranthas/naan , raita and salad for that mouth watering combo meal.

A satisfying meal requires little bit of planning. Do read our serving suggestion above to make your weekend meals even more special!

Tips -

  • If you don’t have fresh tomatoes in hand, then try adding 1-2 table spoon of tomato ketchup right after adding water. The results would be more or less similar. But, fresh tomatoes taste best.
  • Serve this curry with a dollop of BUTTER for a richer flavor and aroma.
